4. The Built Environment
This chapter explores in detail how the built environment contributes to the distinctive character of the landscape of the AONB the evolution of which has been described in the preceding chapter.
It discusses how elements in the landscape can be classified and described, and explores in details how four aspects of the built environment - settlement, boundaries, roofs and walls - contribute to local distinctiveness at a number of levels. The aim is to assist in defining what it is that makes the Cotswolds AONB special at the regional level, while providing a starting point for its further exploration at the truly local (e.g. Village Design Statement) level.
